Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) has appealed on other states in the Country to emulate Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai by increasing maternity leave to 6 months in their states to enable mothers carry out exclusive breastfeeding for six months to reduce the indices of malnutrition.
The appeal was made during a two days budget meeting organized by CS-SUNN in collaboration with PINNS for stakeholders from nutrition line ministries from Niger, Nasarawa and Kaduna States.
During the meeting, it was revealed that Nigeria contributes the highest number of stunted children in Africa adding that six months maternity leave will help reduce the indices of malnutrition in the country.
The meeting which took place at the Corinthia Villa Hotel in Garki Abuja, is to promote understanding of the current nutrition situation and the need for prompt action in the three states.
CS-SUNN also appealed for quick release of budgeted funds to carry out nutrition activities in the states to eradicate malnutrition in the states.
The meeting which had House of Assembly members, permanent Secretaries, State Nutrition Officers and Journalists was to secure commitment from key stakeholders towards improving the budget, ensuring prompt release and utilization of funds.
All three states presented the overview of the nutrition situation in their states and it was glaring that more needs to be done to reduce eradicate malnutrition in the country.
